Gadsden Wildlife Education: Do Rodents Make Good Pets?
That all depends on what type of rodent, where it came from, and whether it’s a wild rodent or a domesticated one. Mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, and other small rodents are often raised as pets and even as show animals. Occasionally you hear of someone who has successfully made a pet of some other rodent, such as a porcupine, squirrel, or chipmunk. But it is not advisable to try to tame a wild rodent.
Domestic Rodents
Domestic mice, rats, guinea pigs, and hamsters all make reasonably good pets if properly cared for. They can be purchased from a reputable breeder or pet store. They require care just like any other pet, so you must be committed to taking good care of them when you make your purchase.
Housing
Your pet rodent, whether it is a hamster, guinea pig, mouse, or rat, will require a wire cage of sufficient size for it to be able to run around in and exercise. It will have room for a “quiet room” where your pet can go to rest, sleep, or just have some quiet time to itself. If you have a pair of rodents, it will also serve as a nesting box. There must be plenty of room for feed and water containers. Often the water container is a long cylinder that attaches to the outside of the cage with a drinking spout that curves into the cage. You also will need to provide an exercise wheel, especially for a hamster or guinea pig. There are a variety of other play devices that pet rodents enjoy and will provide them with entertainment and exercise. You will also need some type of bedding material, which is available at good pet stores.
Care
You will need to be sure to provide fresh food and water for your pet daily. It is important, not only to the rodent, but also to your home to keep the cage clean. Generally you will not need to bathe your pet, because they are constantly grooming themselves. But there are times when a bath may be necessary. A sponge bath is preferable, but you can give a full bath if needed. Times when a bath is indicated include when the rodent gets into something sticky or messy, when the pet gets old and doesn’t groom itself sufficiently, or if you plan to show the pet. For showing, bathe the rodent several days before the show to allow time for the natural oils to get back onto the fur, otherwise the fur will appear dull or wispy.
